Executive Interview Video Production

Showcasing Leadership Through Interviews

Executive interview video production provides companies with a way to share leadership perspectives, highlight expertise, and reinforce brand authority. With careful pre-production planning, location scouting, lighting design, and multi-camera setups, these videos create a polished and engaging narrative. Whether for employees, clients, or public relations, executive interviews establish credibility and deliver authentic messages aligned with company branding.

The Purpose of Executive Interview Videos

Executive interviews give leaders an opportunity to communicate directly with employees, clients, and wider audiences. These videos frame company executives as approachable, knowledgeable, and aligned with company values. As J. Wardrup of Firebrand Media explains, pre-production planning and careful design ensure that the final product reflects both professionalism and authenticity.

The format often includes a moderator guiding questions, much like the CEO Diaries series on YouTube. This style allows executives to share their vision while keeping the conversation accessible. Companies like Udacity have used this approach to spotlight leaders, employees, and even interns, showing different perspectives within the organization.

The Role of Location and Set Design

Location plays a major role in the quality of executive interview production. A professional setting aligned with the company’s branding communicates credibility, while poor location choices can undermine the message. Location scouting is part of the pre-production process, ensuring that the backdrop and environment reinforce the executive’s presence.

Set design also requires attention. From staging furniture to arranging backgrounds, every element should enhance the visual appeal without distracting from the message.

Lighting and Technical Setup

Lighting is one of the most critical components of executive interviews. Standard kits may be adequate for basic shoots, but high-level productions benefit from advanced lighting treatments. Firebrand Media employs tools such as 8×8 scrims, negative fills, and bounce lighting to create depth, eliminate harsh shadows, and highlight executives in a flattering, professional way.

Crew size varies depending on the project. While small teams can manage simple setups, larger productions with more complex treatments may involve crews of 15 to 20. Timeframes also vary, with interviews often taking only a few hours to film but requiring a full day or more for setup and teardown.

Creative Camera Angles for Engaging Content

Camera work can elevate business executive interviews beyond standard formats. Straight-on shots and 45-degree close-ups establish clarity and intimacy, while creative angles add variety. For example, breaking the fourth wall with wide shots that reveal elements of the production, or floor-level shots capturing the entire set, can add a unique dimension.

Including shots of the moderator or incorporating over-the-shoulder perspectives introduces additional narrative depth. These stylistic choices ensure the final product feels modern and engaging rather than formulaic.

Why Business Executive Interviews Add Value

Executive interviews serve as powerful communication tools. They can be used for internal purposes, such as motivating staff or aligning teams, or for external messaging, such as PR campaigns and client engagement. They highlight leadership while also reinforcing the company’s brand identity.

By blending strong visuals, professional setups, and creative storytelling, production companies ensure that executives appear polished, relatable, and authoritative. These videos become assets that continue to deliver value long after the production is complete.

Hey guys, this is Jay over at Firebrand Media. And today I’m talking about executive interview video production. What is it? What can you expect out of it? And how can a videographer and or production company help you work through them strategically?

Setting up an executive interview can be kind of challenging, being that location plays a great deal in the curb appeal of that video. I want to focus on that curb appeal because where you shoot it is going to determine the overall quality of the production. Typically location scouting takes a bit of pre-production planning with the coordinator or a marketing team in framing that executive style in line with the branding of the company.

An executive interview will follow the format typically of a moderator with that executive where they’ll ask a handful of questions that are on target or on branding or have a specific PR purpose. A popular format that I like is in the CEO Diaries. If you’ve ever watched those on YouTube, they’re very insightful. The way that they pose the executive with the moderator or the host is a great staging or a great treatment for a video like that. We’ve done similar work with a company called Udacity where we needed to frame an executive’s message with their employee base where the employee also had a spot and a segment where they were answering questions about their roles in the company as well as an intern that graduated from the internship to an employee in that same company.

If you’ve got the location scouting wrapped and locked in, the production company should really focus on the treatment of lighting. Lighting is everything. It’s not equal. Using your average parabolic dome kit for, let’s say, your key and fill and having a kicker or a hair light won’t do it. You want to step it up by incorporating scrims. We have an 8x8 scrim that we use on site for those type of interviews, or let’s say negative fills, bounces, all kinds of tools you can use in production. But for executive interviews, you want to step it up and make that lighting pop.

Crew sizes for an executive interview could range from 3 to 5, 15, even 20 people. It just depends on the treatment and scope of work for that set build. An interview may take two or three hours at most, but striking the set and tearing down that set is another story. You may be looking at a full day to a full day and a half or it may be even two full days of production to nail that interview down.

Now for the camera angles, you want to step that up as well. So having your straight on and your 45-degree close-up angle, that could do the trick. But adding some nuance by having a breaking-the-fourth-wall camera and that’s like staged further back and showing elements of the production or getting a floor angle that’s showing the entirety of the set with the CEO sitting or the executive sitting. An interview camera for the moderator could be a nuanced approach, but you can add a little bit of creativity to spice up those executive interview videos.

All in all, different production companies have their different styles, but it all goes back to the scope of work and treatment that the marketing department is looking for.
