Lapel microphone setups are small, discreet audio tools that clip onto clothing and capture clean sound without restricting movement. Whether wired or wireless, lapel mics are ideal for event speakers, corporate presenters, or interview subjects who need flexibility. They provide professional sound quality while allowing natural hand gestures and stage presence, making them a go to choice for both live events and video production.
A lapel microphone is a small audio device designed to be clipped onto clothing or hidden discreetly under garments. It can be wired or wireless, but both function to send sound directly to a recorder or camera. Lapel microphones are frequently used in events, commercial shoots, and corporate videos where clear audio is required without visible equipment.
Speakers often need freedom of movement. Unlike handheld microphones, lapel setups allow presenters to gesture naturally, move around the stage, or multitask without distraction. They’re particularly helpful for passionate speakers who rely heavily on body language and do not want to be tied to holding a mic.
Lapel microphones give talent the freedom to step away during breaks without removing gear. Production crews can mute channels or power down the pack while the subject refreshes, eats, or takes calls. This saves time and avoids interruptions during long shoots or events.
From conference presentations to interviews, lapel microphones deliver discreet audio capture that blends seamlessly into professional productions. They’re an essential part of a videographer’s kit and can be quickly integrated into the scope of work. Whether used on stage, in panel discussions, or in corporate shoots, lapel setups ensure reliable sound quality without compromising visuals.

Hey guys, my name is Jay at Firebrand Media and today we’re talking about lapel microphone setups. What are they and how can a production company and/or videographer help use them in your production?
So in short, a lapel microphone is any microphone that’s small enough to be clipped on a blouse or internally under garments that could either be wired or wireless. Typically you see lapel mics being used in different event settings and on commercial gigs and corporate videography jobs where they want to hide the microphone and they want to hide the wire.
A lapel microphone allows the speaker or the subject that’s being filmed flexibility to move and go where they please. In a lot of cases, clients that we’ve worked with have to pick up a phone call, go to the restroom, refresh, maybe they’re hungry and they need to take a lunch break, but they don’t have to necessarily take the microphone off. We just mute the channel and we just turn off the battery pack so that they can move freely.
I mentioned that lapel mics can be both wireless and wired. Essentially they’re the same thing. They’re feeding an audio source via a channel, whether it’s wireless or wired to the camera or a field recorder, so that it can be used in post-production.
Lapel mics are used for different industry purposes, being like if you’re at an event and you’re speaking on stage, there’s no point in setting up a shotgun mic overhead when you’re on stage—it makes no sense. So having an omnidirectional microphone in hand, or let’s say a discreet lapel mic, is better for presenting.
You may be someone who uses their hands to present, right? Well, you don’t want to be holding a microphone and trying to talk at the same time. With passionate speakers, we often advise them to use a lapel mic. We have them in our kit, and they can be easily added to the scope of work if planned for.
If you have any questions about lapel microphone setups and want a videographer and/or a production company like us to help you figure out what you’re needing for your scope of work, feel free to reach out at Firebrand Media. We’d love to help you.
